With the NBA preseason training camp about to kick off, contract extension negotiations between the Detroit Pistons and star big man Jalen Duren have hit a standstill. According to the latest reports, in an effort to retain their dominant paint presence, the Pistons have raised their offer to a staggering five-year, $200 million deal. However, whether the two sides can reach an agreement remains highly uncertain, with the key sticking point being incentive clauses in the contract that Duren feels show a lack of respect.
Over the past period, negotiations between the Pistons and Duren’s camp had been deadlocked over the salary figure. The team initially insisted on an annual salary of around $35 million, while Duren’s side firmly pushed for a max deal of $40 million per year. According to ESPN senior insider Shams Charania, the Pistons have now made a concession, offering a five-year, $200 million contract with an average annual salary of $40 million.
Although the price tag has met expectations, the contract details have become a flashpoint for friction. Charania noted that the Pistons inserted incentive clauses related to “weight management” into the deal, which sparked strong dissatisfaction from Duren’s camp. They believe the team lacks basic respect for the player, causing negotiations to stall once again.
“The talks between the Pistons and Duren are currently at a standstill,” Charania said bluntly. “Whether Duren will show up for media day and training camp seven days from now remains very uncertain.”
As a restricted free agent, if Duren ultimately refuses the long-term offer, he can instead sign a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Sources indicate that the Sacramento Kings are already eyeing him, ready to offer a max contract next year. ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon even revealed that multiple other teams are prepared to offer Duren a max deal behind the scenes.
Duren had a breakout season last year, earning All-Star honors and a spot on the All-NBA Third Team. However, his performance declined significantly in the playoffs, which became one of the main reasons for the back-and-forth during extension talks this summer. Whether the 20-year-old interior prospect will choose to follow the money or “dignity” into free agency will be a key storyline before the season starts.
